Crossing Borders for Art
Spotlight: Quarshie Tornu
Quarshie is a Ghanaian painter, sculptor, and educator. Born in Accra in 1974, he trained at several renowned art colleges across West and Southern Africa, from Ghanata to Limpopo to Shilo Tiegio. His work is abstract and deeply rooted in the beauty of Ghanaian culture and the natural world. He paints from his imagination, and it shows.
We met in 2018 at an art market in Accra. I bought a piece that still hangs in my home before Artdey even existed. When I started this platform, I knew I wanted to share his work with others. But representing a Ghanaian artist while based in Nigeria isn’t as easy as it sounds. We’ve navigated Momo payments, Chisco bus drop-offs, and favours from friends flying between Accra and Lagos, all to get the art from his studio to your homes. (DHL prices? Let’s not even go there.)
Representing African artists across Africa shouldn’t be this hard.
We should be able to move, work, and trade across the continent with ease.
But until that day comes, we’ll keep doing what we do: getting art to turn your houses into homes, one painting at a time.
